The town known by its ancient religious
name as Kasi, by its present Sanskritized name of Varanasi,
and more commonly as Benares, lies athwart the Ganges and is
one of the oldest continually inhabited places in the world.
Traditionally, the design of the brocade is first worked out
on paper and then an expert artisian, known as ‘naksha
bandha’, renders the design into cotton threads.
The
Benares brocades are hand loomed in silk, with profuse use
of metal thread. The brocades are woven in workshops known
as ‘karkhanahs’ where nearly every square inch
of ground space is taken up with looms. Above each loom hangs
a crowded arrangement of strings leading down to the loom heddles.
The Zari thread, used in your pillow cover, is known as ‘kalabattun’ and
consists of finely drawn gold, silver or base metal thread,
wound round a silk thread.
It takes a steady hand and 3,000
strokes on the loom to make one single pillow cover. The Regal “Circle
of Hearts” design is particularly complex and work intensive.
Only the most skilled artisians have agreed to reproduce this
design for Aspirare in the finest of brocades. As they are all
done by hand, there may be slight imperfections.
